RIVER HORSE PAVILION

Home of Nikawa

William Least heat-Moon, Boone county resident and author of the bestselling book, River-Horse, donated the boat that he piloted across America in 1995 to the Boone County Historical Society.  He also contributed artifacts and documents relating to this historic voyage.  Nikawa is one of only a few vessels to cross the continent on inland waterways since the Lewis & Clark Corps of Discovery expedition in 1804-06.

The Society has displayed the boat and artifacts and coupled them with other exhibits featuring the importance of the Missouri River to our heritage and housed them all in the River-Horse Pavilion.  Open at all times, the pavilion is a wonderful addition to the museum's educational mission.  Come celebrate the spirit of adventure and learn about the historic Missouri River.
